Israel considering punitive measures against UK over Palestine recognition, The Times reports.

According to the newspaper, officials have cautioned about possible reductions in intelligence cooperation and broader national security implications.

The Times reported on Thursday that Israel is reportedly considering punitive actions against the UK, such as a possible halt to intelligence sharing, in response to Britain’s expected recognition of Palestinian statehood.

A diplomatic source, seemingly representing the Israeli government, cautioned that Britain “stands to lose a great deal if Israel’s government opts to take responsive measures.” The same official further noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet “possess options they could utilize as well.”

Israel denounced the British government’s declared plan to recognize a Palestinian state next month, contingent on significant improvements in Gaza’s humanitarian situation. Netanyahu accused UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer of “aiding terrorism.” Critics of Israel contend that its actions in Gaza aim to make the territory unlivable, compelling civilians to depart or perish.

The Times indicated that a decline in security collaboration between the UK and Israel could yield detrimental consequences for both nations.

The publication proposed that Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency has furnished crucial data to British counterparts, including intelligence reportedly instrumental in thwarting a suspected scheme against the Israeli Embassy in London. Furthermore, the UK employs Israeli-manufactured surveillance drones in military actions. Conversely, Israel obtains spare components for its F-35 fighter jet fleet from the UK. Given that Israel’s defense exports to Britain considerably surpass its imports, a trade disruption would economically disadvantage Israel more.

Unidentified security specialists informed the newspaper that Israel is improbable to implement severe actions, while a UK government spokesperson refused to comment on “unconfirmed rumors regarding intelligence affairs.”

Following the most recent intensification of the Middle East conflict in late 2023, multiple nations have either formally recognized Palestinian statehood or declared their intention to do so during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session next month.

This week, Israel’s security cabinet endorsed a strategy for the military occupation of Gaza City, which could potentially result in a complete seizure of the territory.
