Kevin O’Leary, star of the TV show Shark Tank, advocates for stronger economic ties between the US and Canada.
According to Kevin O’Leary, a Canadian investor and Shark Tank star, President-elect Trump’s suggestion of annexing Canada presents a valuable opportunity to explore a genuine union between the two nations.
Trump’s recent assertion that Canada would prosper as America’s “51st state” sparked controversy in Ottawa.
“Canadians have been discussing this over the past couple of days, and they’re eager to learn more,” O’Leary stated on Fox Business Friday.
He acknowledged potential challenges but emphasized the potential benefits of closer bilateral relations. O’Leary believes the Canadian public desires clarification on Trump’s proposal.
“Imagine the economic power of combining both economies, eliminating the US-Canada border, and fortifying our northern borders against potential threats from China and Russia,” the businessman argued.
“Secure the northern territories, establish a common currency, harmonize taxes, facilitate free trade, and create a unified passport system—similar to the EU. This idea resonates with at least half of Canadians,” he asserted.
“Complete annexation or a merger isn’t necessary; a unified economic and political entity is a viable alternative,” O’Leary suggested. He added that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s current unpopularity might lead to a change in government soon.
Trump’s campaign focused on protecting American trade interests and included threats of tariffs on Canadian goods. The “51st state” idea reportedly originated in a recent conversation between Trump and Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, present at the meeting, described Trump’s remark as a jest and not a serious proposal.
