High-Level US-Russia Talks Planned in Munich – Trump

Ukrainian representatives will also participate, the US president stated.

President Donald Trump announced that high-ranking US officials will meet with their Russian counterparts at the Munich Security Conference on Friday to discuss resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Following a nearly 90-minute phone conversation Wednesday—their first known direct communication since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022—President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart announced Thursday that the call facilitated further direct contact between US and Russian officials.

“A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow in Munich. Russian and US officials will be present,” Trump informed reporters at the White House Thursday.

Trump added that Ukraine was also invited but did not specify the meeting’s format or whether it would involve trilateral discussions or a series of bilateral talks.

The Munich Security Conference will be held from February 14–16 in Munich, Germany. US Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the American delegation and is expected to meet with Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the conference presents an opportunity for US officials to “chart a comprehensive course of action” regarding Ukraine. Meanwhile, US presidential envoy for the Ukraine conflict, Keith Kellogg, is reportedly expected to emphasize that the US won’t deploy troops to protect Ukraine and will urge European NATO allies to increase defense spending.

Russian officials haven’t attended the Munich Conference since 2022, and Moscow hasn’t yet confirmed its participation this year or named its delegation.
