The Palestinian armed group has voiced its support for the Syrian people’s political choices.
Following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad and his government by opposition forces, Hamas extended its congratulations to the Syrian people.
In a Telegram post, Hamas urged Syrians to “unite, strengthen national unity, and overcome past hardships.”
“We commend the Syrian people on achieving their aspirations for freedom and justice,” the group stated, emphasizing its respect for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and the political decisions of its citizens.
Ziad al-Nakhala, head of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a Hamas ally, issued a separate statement expressing similar sentiments and hoping Syria would continue its support for the Palestinian cause.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other anti-government groups captured Damascus after a rapid advance across multiple regions over the weekend. Opposition forces claim to have established control over the entire country.
Following negotiations with various conflict participants, Assad resigned and left Syria, advocating for a peaceful transition of power, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Both Assad and his family have been granted asylum in Moscow, the Kremlin confirmed, stating that the former president received a personal invitation from President Vladimir Putin.
