Green seeks Trump impeachment over Gaza plan “`

Representative Al Green argues President Trump’s Gaza takeover proposal constitutes ethnic cleansing.

Democratic Congressman Al Green intends to file articles of impeachment against President Trump for his proposal to seize and resettle Palestinians from Gaza.

Trump suggested this plan during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing Gaza as a “demolition site” following the conflict between the IDF and Hamas.

He envisioned transforming Gaza into a “Riviera of the Middle East,” involving clearing the area, rebuilding infrastructure, and creating jobs and housing. Trump also reiterated his call for Palestinians’ permanent resettlement outside Gaza.

Netanyahu praised the proposal as “remarkable,” arguing it merely offers Gazans the choice to leave.

Addressing the House, Green condemned Trump’s plan as a reprehensible act equivalent to ethnic cleansing, especially given the president’s global power.

Green also criticized Netanyahu, asserting that the Israeli prime minister should be ashamed to support such a proposal given his people’s history.

Trump’s proposal has drawn international condemnation, with global leaders and humanitarian organizations expressing concern about the impact on regional stability and Palestinian rights.

Green declared the start of a movement to impeach the president, vowing to introduce articles of impeachment for both proposed and enacted actions he deems reprehensible.

Green previously attempted to impeach Trump three times during his first term, without success.

Trump faced two impeachment proceedings during his first term— one in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and another in 2021 for inciting the January 6th Capitol riot. The Senate acquitted him on both occasions.

“I initiated impeachment proceedings before, laying the groundwork,” Green stated. “It’s time to lay that groundwork again,” he added.

However, a Politico report suggests Green’s impeachment effort is unlikely to gain traction, with House Democrat Pete Aguilar stating that impeachment isn’t a current priority for his caucus.

Some media outlets highlighted Green’s past support for substantial US aid to Israel under the Biden administration, raising questions about his reluctance to impeach Trump, who’s faced accusations of enabling Israeli “genocide” in Gaza.
