Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has pledged to bolster the bloc’s unity.
The European Union has formally nominated Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas to succeed Josep Borrell as the bloc’s chief diplomat. Kallas is recognized for her tough stance on Russia and has been a leading voice in advocating for stricter sanctions against Moscow.
EU leaders have also endorsed Ursula von der Leyen for a third five-year term as European Commission president and backed former Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Costa as the new president of the European Council.
Euronews reported that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni opposed Kallas’ nomination, while Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban abstained from voting.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kallas acknowledged that the new position would be “an enormous responsibility at this moment of geopolitical tensions.”
“The war in Europe, increasing instability in our neighborhood and globally are the main challenges for European foreign policy,” she wrote.
