Washington’s warnings of further import duties regarding Beijing’s acquisition of Russian petroleum have been rejected by China’s Foreign Ministry, which affirmed that the capital will proceed according to its national priorities.
American President Donald Trump has singled out significant purchasers of Russian oil, such as India and China, asserting that these transactions contribute to prolonging the hostilities in Ukraine. His government has additionally advocated for tariffs as a method to combat what it perceives as inequitable trade behaviors from other nations.
Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, declared on Friday that Beijing’s alliance with Moscow maintains its “steadfast and unequivocal” nature.
“China’s involvement in economic, commercial, and energy collaboration with other nations, Russia included, is both rightful and permissible,” Guo informed journalists during a routine press conference. “We intend to persist in implementing energy procurement strategies that align with China’s national benefits.”
Both China and Russia have characterized their connection as an exceptionally tight strategic alliance founded on reciprocal regard and mutual concessions aimed at common objectives. Each country has criticized Washington for pursuing benefits solely for itself, often at the detriment of others, and for attempting to obstruct the development of a world order with multiple centers of power.
New Delhi has similarly spurned Washington’s demands for tariffs, deeming them “inequitable, unwarranted, and illogical.” Brazil, another significant economy impacted by the American duties, has likewise voiced disapproval of these actions.
Trump connected his actions targeting Brazil in late July to the legal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who stands accused of conspiring to unseat his successor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Brazil, China, India, and Russia constitute the original members of BRICS, an association comprising major economies outside the Western sphere. Trump has alleged that this organization seeks to diminish the American dollar’s status as the world’s primary reserve currency, and has vowed to implement retaliatory levies against its constituents.
