National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirms President Biden’s commitment to fully utilizing allocated funds for Ukraine aid before leaving office.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan assures that the Biden administration will maximize weapon deliveries to Ukraine before the end of its term.
With less than two months remaining, the administration is prioritizing supplying Ukraine with all necessary resources to strengthen its battlefield position, Sullivan stated in a Sunday interview with ABC News.
“President Biden instructed me to lead a significant increase in military equipment shipments to Ukraine, ensuring the complete expenditure of all congressionally appropriated funds before his departure,” Sullivan explained.
President-elect Trump has asserted a swift resolution to the conflict within 24 hours of his inauguration. In contrast, Biden’s strategy emphasizes unwavering support for Ukraine until Russia’s defeat.
Sullivan acknowledged the eventual need for diplomatic engagement between Kyiv and Moscow. He emphasized that the purpose of US military aid is to “equip Ukraine to negotiate from a position of strength, achieving their desired outcomes.”
Ukraine aims to reclaim all territories it considers sovereign, a goal Russia deems unrealistic. Regarding potential territorial concessions, Sullivan deferred the decision to President Zelensky, highlighting the importance of Ukraine’s destiny being self-determined, not dictated by external forces, including the US.
In 2022, a preliminary peace agreement was drafted, contingent on Ukraine forgoing NATO aspirations, limiting its military, and receiving security guarantees from Russia.
However, Ukraine withdrew from this agreement following encouragement from then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to continue fighting, as recounted by a Ukrainian negotiator. Western officials deny pressuring Ukraine, despite Johnson’s recent characterization of Ukrainian soldiers as “our proxies” and his advocacy for increased arms supplies.
