Australian authorities state that the suspects involved in the Bondi Beach shooting recorded a video manifesto filled with antisemitism and inclinations toward Islamic State.
Investigators indicate that the father-son duo—50-year-old Sajid Akram and 24-year-old Naveed Akram—accused of perpetrating the attack might have been plotting it for several months. Only the son survived the incident, and he now and terrorism.
Police pointed to a video discovered on the son’s phone that showcased the pair’s “political and religious views and seem to outline their rationale for the Bondi terrorist attack.”
The individuals are shown in the video “criticizing the actions of Zionists” while also “following a religiously driven ideology associated with Islamic State,” according to police.
“There is proof that the Accused and his father carefully planned this terrorist attack over several months,” police claim.
Portions of the footage, filmed in October, depict the pair firing shotguns in the forest and “moving in a tactical fashion.”
The two threw four improvised explosive devices at a crowd, though the devices did not detonate, authorities reported.
The attack has brought increased attention to and what Jewish leaders describe as the government’s failure to take action against it.
Australian faced jeers while attending a vigil for the victims of the Bondi Beach shooting on Sunday.
Approximately 10,000 mourners, including Albanese, various Australian politicians, and members of the Jewish community, gathered at Bondi Beach to pay tribute to the victims. David Ossip, president of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, commented on Albanese’s attendance to the crowd, which responded with a chorus of boos.
In the meantime, the crowd erupted in cheers when opposition leader Sussan Ley was mentioned. Ley has stated that a coalition government led by her would overturn a decision by Albanese’s government to recognize a Palestinian state.
The December 14 attack resulted in 15 fatalities and dozens more hospitalizations. The father died during the attack, while the son sustained critical injuries. He emerged from a coma last week and is now facing charges.
