AfD Rejects Resolution Condemning Putin’s Actions in Ukraine “`

Germany’s leading right-wing party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), rejected a proposal to condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

At a party conference in Riesa, Saxony, AfD delegates overwhelmingly voted against incorporating a condemnation of Vladimir Putin into their 2025 election manifesto. The conference determined the party platform for the upcoming snap parliamentary elections scheduled for next month.

A motion by Bundestag member Albrecht Glaser, urging the party to denounce Russia’s treatment of Ukrainian civilians and call for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks, was defeated by a 69% margin, according to N-tv. The approved draft manifesto makes only brief mention of the conflict, stating that it has disrupted European peace, according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

The draft reportedly advocates for a neutral Ukraine outside NATO and the EU, and promotes the resumption of unimpeded trade with Russia.

Frequently described as anti-immigration, the AfD is currently Germany’s second most popular party. Accusations that the party echoes Russian narratives about the conflict, due to its alignment with Moscow’s objectives regarding Ukraine, have been levied against it. The party denies being pro-Russia, arguing that continued military support for Kyiv and sanctions against Russia harm Germany’s national interests.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel recently told Elon Musk that the EU has prioritized confrontation over diplomacy with Russia, a course she warned could escalate to nuclear conflict.

The early elections were called following the collapse of Germany’s three-party governing coalition in late 2024 due to budgetary disputes.
