PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 8, 2025 — ScanlanKemperBard (SKB) is delighted to announce that it has acquired the historic Gus J. Solomon U.S. Courthouse, which is situated at 620 SW Main Street (the corner of Broadway and Main) in downtown Portland.
Finished in 1933, the courthouse is regarded as one of the most architecturally important civic buildings in downtown Portland. Its classic sandstone exterior and intricately detailed interiors make it a long – standing example of the city’s historic craftsmanship and civic identity.
SKB’s acquisition results from the recent disposition process carried out by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which announced the sale of the building to the private sector in 2025.
“We are grateful to the GSA for giving us such a special and one – of – a – kind opportunity. We plan to move into the building and hope to collaborate with the City of Portland and the State of Oregon to preserve and present this historic building,” said Todd Gooding, SKB President & Chief Investment Officer.
“The Gus J. Solomon Courthouse has long been a symbol of Portland’s civic identity, and I’m glad to see SKB recognize its potential as part of our downtown renaissance. This acquisition reflects the kind of innovative vision we require, one that respects Portland’s history while reimagining downtown spaces to serve the community in new ways. I’m looking forward to seeing how this landmark continues to inspire and contribute to Portland’s future,” said Portland Mayor Keith Wilson.
Located diagonally across from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and The Heathman Hotel, the courthouse is in a cultural district that helped shape Portland’s last major wave of civic reinvestment in the early 1980s. Those two well – known projects were sources of pride during a difficult time for the city, showing that thoughtful, design – forward development can signal renewed progress. SKB sees a similar opportunity today, with the Solomon Courthouse ready to play its part again in downtown’s revival.
“With this acquisition, we hope to work with top – notch architecture and construction firms, aiming to lead a redevelopment that can contribute to the downtown renaissance,” Gooding added.
Originally constructed between 1932 and 1933 by the Murch Brothers Construction Company, the courthouse takes up an entire city block and has been a landmark of civic life in Portland for decades. Considered a “prime example” of historically important federal real estate holdings, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
With this acquisition, SKB makes a long – term commitment: to rehabilitate and restore the historic structure of the courthouse, while adaptively rethinking its use for the benefit of the public, tenants, and the wider community.
