HEFEI, China, Dec. 18, 2025 — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has formally achieved grid connection for its landmark energy storage system (ESS) project, which boasts a nameplate capacity of 7.8GWh. Upon full activation, it is set to become the world’s largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS), representing a significant milestone in the progress of renewable energy across the Middle East.

Sungrow Saudi Arabia 7.8 GWh Project

The project covers three sites situated in southwestern Saudi Arabia: Najran, Khamis Mushait, and Madaya. Sungrow, the equipment supplier, played a key role by manufacturing over 1,500 PowerTitan 2.0 systems in a mere 58 days and delivering the entire project within a highly demanding timeframe.

The PowerTitan 2.0 system is characterized by an all-in-one AC-DC block design, incorporating embedded power conversion systems (PCS), a pre-assembled battery container, medium voltage transformers and RMU, as well as thorough factory testing. This simplified setup notably cuts down on-site installation time. Moreover, Sungrow has stationed a specialized local service team of experts in Saudi Arabia to assist with installation, commissioning, and grid connection.

This 7.8 GWh project signals the start of large-scale energy storage implementation in the Middle East. The project’s annual charge-discharge capacity is projected to hit 2.2 billion kWh, sufficient to meet the yearly electricity requirements of 400,000 households in Saudi Arabia.

The project makes a substantial contribution to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and aids the global shift toward clean, sustainable energy.
