Linda Yaccarino Departs X After Two Years as CEO

Linda Yaccarino, who served as CEO of Elon Musk’s social media platform X for two years, has recently departed from her role, with the reasons for her exit currently unconfirmed.

New York City, New York Jul 10, 2025 – Linda Yaccarino has resigned as CEO of the social media company X. Her departure follows a controversy where the chatbot Grok was reported to have propagated antisemitic tropes in user responses. It remains unconfirmed whether this incident directly prompted her resignation. A month earlier, Musk had also transferred ownership of X to his artificial intelligence firm, xAI. Yaccarino shared the news via a social media post, expressing ‘immense gratitude’ for being ‘entrusted me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App’.

She further stated, ‘Now, the best is yet to come as X enters a new chapter with @xai’. In the same post, Yaccarino commented, ‘I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world.’ Immediately following her announcement, Musk replied, saying, ‘Thank you for your contributions.’ Despite this, Yaccarino’s departure has surprised many. A current employee, who requested anonymity due to not being authorized to speak publicly, indicated that significant internal challenges within the company might have contributed to her resignation.

X has been experiencing difficulties in its advertising sector, notably in 2023 when Musk controversially told advertisers to ‘go f**k yourself.’ Amidst these issues, an employee observed, ‘There’s been a lack of clarity, internally and externally as well, of what X is supposed to be.’ They further added, ‘If you can’t articulate what our plan is for the next three years.’ Numerous problems have emerged within the company since Musk’s acquisition of X. Additionally, there have been discussions concerning the extent of Yaccarino’s actual authority as CEO in contrast to Musk’s pervasive influence.

Jasmine Enberg, Vice President at Emarketer, commented that ‘Being the CEO of X was always going to be a tough job, and Yaccarino lasted in the role longer than many expected.’ She added, ‘Faced with a mercurial owner who never fully stepped away from the helm and continued to use the platform as his personal megaphone, Yaccarino had to try to run the business while also regularly putting out fires’.
