In a tribute to a father’s aspiration, a group of American women will ascend Kilimanjaro to raise $111,000 for the construction of a school in Tanzania.
Boulder, Colorado – June 16, 2025 – This August, a team of dedicated women will embark on a transformative journey to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, not for personal recognition, but to realize the last wish of Eugene Schellenberg, a loving father, generous philanthropist, and avid climber who dreamed of bringing education to underprivileged children in Tanzania.
The climb is part of a broader effort to collect $111,000 to finance the Eugene English Medium School in Ifakara, Tanzania. The project expands upon Eugene’s history of service, which began over two decades ago during a visit with his wife, Margaret, to their son, a malaria researcher in Ifakara. A chance encounter with a nun at a local market led to the creation of the Ifakara Bakery Project – a program that currently feeds more than 1,000 children daily and supports kindergartens, orphanages, and patients in local hospitals and leprosy centers.
Before his death, Eugene’s ultimate goal was to establish a school that would provide young children with early English education, thereby opening doors to secondary education and future opportunities.
“This is more than just a climb; it’s a promise being fulfilled,” states his daughter, Annie Schellenberg, who is supporting the mission from the United States. “We are continuing the work my father began, sowing seeds of hope for generations to come.”
“When women commit to something larger than themselves, magic happens. They move mountains to achieve the impossible.”
– Dr. Kelly Martin Schuh
The climbing team consists of purpose-driven women from across the U.S.—entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, educators, and changemakers—each with their own personal reasons for accepting the challenge of the mountain. Together, they embody a growing movement of leaders who are redefining what it means to create a lasting impact. At a time when more women are assuming positions of influence, stewardship, and service, this mission serves as a powerful reminder that when women lead with purpose, vision, and grace, we don’t just climb mountains; we move them.
