Chicago, Illinois Jul 22, 2024 – Juan Finch Jr., a veteran who transitioned from the United States Navy to the cannabis industry, was presented with an opportunity in Illinois by a friend at Clover. During the licensing process, he discovered a residency requirement that initially seemed to be a barrier to his entry. However, he learned that the law was deemed unconstitutional.
Bob Fitzsimmons, the owner of Nuera Cannabis, sought legal action to overturn the residency requirement, with the case eventually reaching the Seventh Circuit court system (Finch v. Treto). Throughout this process, Juan was accused of hindering minority access to licenses in Illinois. However, as a bisexual Black veteran, he advocates for inclusivity and equal opportunities for all minorities.
Juan is now publicly stating that Nuera exploited him to exclude other minorities from the marijuana industry, despite no explicit agreement to this effect. He claims that Laura Bernal, the COO of Nuera, and Bob Fitzsimmons did not inform him of this intention.
Consequently, Juan is pursuing legal action against Nuera for breach of contract and to expose their alleged unethical practices. This case is currently being heard in Cook County Circuit Court (2023L008973).
While individuals cannot join this specific lawsuit, there is an ongoing effort to create a class action lawsuit seeking compensation for damages incurred by Juan and others who have experienced similar treatment from Nuera.
