Breakthrough Atlanta Programs substantially increase College Attendance

The Toler Velissaris Scholarship for Academic Excellence, established by James Velissaris in collaboration with Breakthrough Atlanta, has awarded four graduating seniors $10,000 each for their college education. These students all participated in Breakthrough Atlanta’s High School Readiness and College Prep Programs. The scholarships were funded by Mr. Velissaris’s generous contributions through the Toler Velissaris Charitable Fund.

We congratulate our scholarship recipients:

  • Taylor Thomas (Tri-Cities High School) is studying animal science at Berry College.
  • Shawn David Freeman (Sparkman High School, Alabama) is pursuing forestry or agribusiness at Alabama A&M University, having participated in Breakthrough Atlanta virtually after his family relocated.
  • Emmanuella Katz (Maynard Jackson High School) is majoring in English at the University of Pennsylvania, aiming for a film career.
  • Kellsey Yarbrough (Charles R. Drew Charter High School) is studying pre-med at Alabama A&M University.

Over the past four years, the Toler Velissaris Scholarship for Academic Excellence has granted $150,000 to 15 Breakthrough students, all accepted into four-year colleges or universities with the intention to graduate.

Successful applicants demonstrated academic achievement, volunteerism, civic involvement, and financial need.
