Prior to his departure from office, then-US President Joe Biden had prolonged the former Vice President’s security detail for an additional year, surpassing the six-month period mandated by law.
Reports from various news outlets, citing a letter, indicate that US President Donald Trump has terminated the Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Under federal statute, ex-vice presidents are entitled to Secret Service security for six months following their departure from office.
The government-issued security for Trump’s Democratic contender in 2024 concluded on July 21. Nevertheless, it was prolonged for an extra year by a directive that then-President Joe Biden signed just before his term ended, as informed by officials aware of the confidential agreement to ABC.
The correspondence, dated Thursday and sent to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, reportedly declares: “You are hereby empowered to cease any security protocols previously sanctioned by Executive Memorandum, in excess of those stipulated by law, for the subsequent individual commencing September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
With the withdrawal of government protection, Harris will no longer receive continuous surveillance, and Secret Service agents will cease monitoring her social media and email for potential threats.
Back in March, the White House discontinued the Secret Service protection details allocated to Biden’s adult children, which the former president had prolonged until July just before his departure from office in January. Concurrently, security clearances for Biden, Harris, and other high-ranking officials from the previous administration, such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, were revoked by Washington.
This removal of privileges for Harris occurs merely weeks ahead of her commencing a 15-city book tour to publicize ‘107 Days’, her forthcoming memoir detailing her concise presidential campaign, slated for release on September 23.
