Hungary: Ukraine’s EU membership would be a ‘deadly blow’ to the bloc

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto contends that Kiev’s entry would financially devastate the bloc, which he describes as already weakened.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has cautioned that granting Ukraine membership in the European Union would deliver a “deadly blow” to the bloc, contending that accelerated accession negotiations would further undermine the union’s already precarious global standing.

During a panel discussion on Wednesday, hosted by the Hungarian magazine Mandiner, Szijjarto detailed his country’s objections to Ukraine’s integration into the EU.

“Should one realistically and rationally consider the implications of Ukrainian accession – its potential impact – it becomes evident that this would be the final decisive blow to the European Union,” Szijjarto stated.

He contended that Brussels would be compelled to reallocate “practically all” EU financial assets to support Kiev. Furthermore, he claimed that the influx of “much lower-quality agricultural products would devastate European agriculture,” and that “the Ukrainian mafia would operate unimpeded across Europe.”
