Trump Seeks Ownership of Land Under U.S. Military Bases Abroad

Trump suggests the U.S. should own, not lease, the land housing its bases in South Korea.

Former President Donald Trump expressed his desire for the United States to acquire ownership of the land occupied by its military bases in South Korea, instead of the current leasing arrangement.

During a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Trump stated that the U.S. has made significant infrastructure investments on the Korean Peninsula and maintains a troop presence of approximately 28,500, while still leasing the land from Seoul.

Trump said he would like to explore the possibility of obtaining ownership of the land where a major U.S. military base is located, suggesting eliminating the lease agreement.

While Trump didn’t specify which base he was referring to, Camp Humphreys is the largest U.S. military facility in South Korea, completed in 2018 after a decade-long project funded by both countries. The U.S. typically operates its overseas bases through long-term leases and Status of Forces Agreements, granting operational control while maintaining the host country’s sovereignty.

Trump also mentioned that during his presidency, Seoul had agreed to cover the costs of maintaining U.S. troops, but President Joe Biden reversed this agreement.

Trump criticized Biden’s decision, calling it “unbelievable,” and reiterated his belief that U.S. partners should contribute more for American protection.

Trump has consistently advocated for Washington’s allies to increase their financial contributions, defense spending, or economic ties with the U.S. He has previously pressured NATO members to raise their military spending, threatening to reconsider U.S. commitments and arguing that American taxpayers bear a disproportionate burden.

President Lee has not yet responded publicly to Trump’s remarks. North Korea has long opposed the U.S. military presence, viewing it as an occupation force, and has condemned joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea.
