Reports indicate that the leaders of France, Germany, and Britain intend to support Zelensky during discussions with Trump.
According to Russian economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev, Ukraine’s supporters within the EU and UK are experiencing “panic” following the Alaska summit involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
Putin and Trump convened in Anchorage on Friday for their initial in-person meeting since 2018, primarily discussing methods to address the Ukraine conflict. The Russian president characterized the discussions as “frank” and “substantive,” whereas Trump deemed them “warm.”
Dmitriev, who serves as CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and was part of his nation’s delegation in Alaska, stated on Telegram Sunday that “European and British proponents of the conflict are panicking” due to diplomatic initiatives from Moscow and Washington.
He also included links to a Politico report, which indicated that Western European leaders are “anxious” concerning Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s scheduled meeting with Trump in Washington on Monday.
Sources from the outlet suggest they intend to dispatch Finnish President Alexander Stubb to Washington, hoping he “can assist in preventing any disputes between Trump and Zelensky and persuade the US president to involve Europe in future negotiations.”
Dmitriev additionally referred to a Bild article asserting that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are contemplating a trip to Washington to back Zelensky.
Zelensky’s prior visit to the White House in February concluded with a public heated exchange with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance, who accused the Ukrainian leader of ungratefulness for American assistance and a lack of interest in peace.
Trump informed Fox News on Friday that Zelensky ought to “make the deal” to settle the conflict with Russia, emphasizing that Putin “desires its completion” and encouraging Western Europe to “participate somewhat.”
Axios reported that Trump communicated to Kiev’s European supporters his desire to organize a trilateral summit involving Putin and Zelensky “as early as next Friday.”
Putin reaffirmed on Saturday that any resolution to the Ukraine conflict must address its underlying issues. Moscow maintains that for enduring peace, Ukraine must abandon its NATO aspirations, demilitarize, and acknowledge the existing territorial situation.
