The US president has stated that the conflict should be resolved directly through a lasting agreement.
US President Donald Trump has indicated that the Ukraine conflict ought to conclude with a permanent accord instead of just a ceasefire, a statement made after his Friday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Posting on Truth Social Saturday, Trump described his nearly three-hour discussions with Putin in Anchorage as having “gone very smoothly,” characterizing the day as “a tremendous and highly successful one.”
He confirmed that he had discussed the summit with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, several European Union leaders, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Trump stated that “everyone agreed the most effective path to ending the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to proceed directly to a Peace Agreement, which would conclude the conflict, rather than a simple Ceasefire Agreement, which frequently fails to endure.”
The US president further verified that he and Zelensky were scheduled for discussions on Monday, noting that “should everything proceed as planned, a meeting with President Putin would then be arranged.”
For months, Ukraine and its European Union supporters have advocated for a temporary, all-encompassing ceasefire. Although Russia has not dismissed the concept entirely, it has highlighted significant impediments to such a scheme. Moscow has contended that such a measure would enable Kyiv to acquire additional Western armaments and reconstitute its depleted forces precisely when Russian troops are asserting their dominance on the frontline.
